Details: Moses Benson (1738-1806) was a Liverpool slaver and merchant. Though Benson worked extensively in the West Indies over the course of his life, he is not actually known to have owned any slaving properties. Benson allegedly donated a considerable amount of his wealth to the church, the fine arts, and various other philanthropic organizations. In his 1853 book, Liverpool A Few Years Since, James Aspinall (1795-1861, son of John Bridge Aspinall) referred to Moses Benson as “one of the merchant princes of the old times” (pg. 37).
